Another casualty of the internet age: mother/daughter bonding. Women used to call their mothers when they needed help with something in the kitchen. "Mom, can you tell me your recipe for fried chicken?" "How long should I boil an egg?" "What IS cilantro, and how do I find it at the grocery store?"
Today when I am faced with a tough cooking question (i.e. figuring out how to make pie crust from scratch) I head for the computer and type it into google. Kazaam. I'm given thousands of websites that tell me how to make "light, flaky pastry crust". I can make it with wheat flour. I can make it with lard. (Disguuuuuusting). I can print out a sheet, complete with pictures, to demonstrate each step in detail.
And then it hits me... I'm missing out. I'm replacing my mom's years of experience in the kitchen with a search engine. I'm losing the chance to talk with her and allow her to teach me something. Something she's GREAT at.
I think I'll call my mom and ask her how she makes her infamous pie crust. I'd rather learn the old fashioned way.
